President Amy Gutmann hosted Ambassador Zhang Qiyue, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in New York, and Education Counselor Xu Yongji to the University of Pennsylvania. Joining Gutmann in welcoming the Chinese visitors were Ezekiel Emanuel, vice provost for global initiatives; Amy Gadsden, executive director for Penn Global and Penn China Initiatives; and Geoffrey Garrett, dean of the Wharton School. They discussed the importance of U.S.-China collaboration and especially the critical role education plays in relations between the two countries. While on campus, the visitors also met with students and with leadership at Perry World House, Fox Leadership International and the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Penn currently has about 2,000 Chinese students, and about 6,000 Penn alumni call China home. Ties between Penn and China grow deeper each year with cross-school initiatives including the Penn Wharton China Center and the Penn China Research and Engagement Fund.
