November 13, 2012 - Time to Deal: Reawakening the Spirit of Compromise in American Politics

Co-authors Amy Gutmann and Dennis Thompson held a discussion based on their recent book, The Spirit of Compromise, to learn what possibilities may exist on the road ahead - held at the Agora of the Annenberg Public Policy Center.

At midnight on December 31, the provisions of the Budget Control Act of 2011 go into effect. Can Congress and the President act cooperatively to avert the fiscal cliff? Will the election change things, and can we avoid continuing down a dysfunctional and polarized path?

Moderator: Michael Delli Carpini, Dean of the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania.
Panelists: William A. Galston, The Ezra Zilkha Chair in the Brookings Institution’s Governance Studies Program; Amy Gutmann, President, University of Pennsylvania; Russell Muirhead, The Robert Clements Associate Professor of Democracy and Politics, Dartmouth College; and Dennis F. Thompson, The Alfred North Whitehead Professor of Political Philosophy, Harvard University.

Co-Sponsored by the Annenberg School for Communication, Penn Political Science Department, and Penn Philosophy, Politics and Economics Program.
