Convocation is the symbolic opening of the academic year and includes an address by both President Amy Gutmann and Provost Vincent Price. It signifies the formal induction of transfer students and the Class of 2015 into the Penn community. Faculty and staff, in full academic regalia, are present, as are flag bearers for each of the College Houses. Convocation marks the entrance of freshman and transfer students into the University's academic community.

Opening Convocation 2011 was held at the famed Palestra with a Dessert Reception immediately following at the Perelman Quadrangle.
