Penn President Amy Gutmann helped to kick off the Office of Social Equity & Community’s inaugural forum. Titled “Self-Evident Truths: Truth Telling, The Media, and Social Equity,” the program featured journalists Andrea Mitchell, C’67, HON’18; Jamil Smith, C’97; and David Freedlander, C’00; as well as Annenberg School for Communication Dean John L. Jackson Jr. and sophomore Wharton student Kayla Padilla. The event was moderated by University Life Division’s Monica Yant Kinney, LPS’17.

The Office of Social Equity & Community at Penn is committed to identifying opportunities for connection and progress in the three pillars of the University’s ongoing mission—inclusion, innovation, and impact—while also celebrating work that is already underway through the heads, hearts, and hands of the many dedicated people who bring Penn to life. Founded under President Gutmann’s leadership during Summer 2020, the Office is led by Chaz Howard, who has served as University Chaplain since 2008. Scott Filkin and Nicole Maloy serve as the Office’s co-directors, and Mercedes Lee is the administrative coordinator.
