In February, Penn announced it had raised $4.3 billion in the Making History Campaign, exceeding its original goal. On Friday, April 19, 2013, Penn said a big “thank you” to everyone who helped make that resounding success a reality. Approximately 10,000 alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents, and donors gathered in Penn Park for the celebration, with entertainment from student groups and exhibition sports matches, as well as performances from Grammy-winning acts Train and John Legend.

Despite overcast skies, crowds munched on complimentary food and beverages and cheered on student performance arts groups, including Mask and Wig, Penn Pipes, and Soundworks Tap Factory. The group Train took the stage and performed before Penn President Amy Gutmann introduced the night’s other headliner, musician John Legend, a 1999 graduate of the College. The finale featured a performance of the original song “Time to Shine,” sung by the Time to Shine Choir, a group of Penn undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.
